What is Automata?

What is Automata? To answer that, let’s address the problem it solves. While the worldwide Internet market has reached tens of trillions USD, it certainly took its time. Compare this with DeFi (Decentralized Finance), which has recorded a stunning $51 billion in the sheer span of a year. Still, progress always comes with its own set of unique problems, and these have been apparent over time: Compromised privacy due to the transparent nature of the blockchain, high upfront opportunity costs from users’ habitual trust in legacy systems, and persistent friction between the blockchain ecosystems halting cross-chain interoperability.

The Solution

Automata Network is a decentralized service protocol that provides middleware-like traceless privacy services for dApps on Ethereum and Polkadot to achieve privacy, high assurance and frictionless computation. Built on cutting-edge crypto privacy protection algorithms and hardware-based trust, the Automata team is bringing the vision of Web3 to reality in a grounded and practical manner. So with its technical pedigree, the project was launched to fill a crucial privacy gap in the forming Web3 stack.

The Highlights

We’d like to take a moment to talk about some of the key features of Automata:

  • Traceless Privacy: Functionalities include anonymous voting for DAOs, private trading bot for traders, and do-not-track querying  for indexers
  • High Assurance: Functionalities include front-running prevention for DEX, tamper-proof data sourcing for oracles, and robust randomness for applications
  • Frictionless Computation: So this allows for speedy cross-chain transactions, sub-second layer 2 for chains and non-intrusive protection for DeFi projects

The Architecture

Here’s a quick introduction on how it all comes together:

Automata Validator

Automator Validators become so by staking tokens and providing a reliable state for participants using Proof-of-Stake consensus. These validators will be responsible for a number of tasks in relation to the control plane, such as: 1) registration of both staking and hosting nodes 2) distribution of work tasks and rewards 3) marketplace for selling and buying computing power.

Automata Geode

Automata Network is the first to introduce and implement Oblivious RAM to build a shielded, unbiased computation environment for decentralized applications. In addition, they are led by some of the industry’s foremost blockchain engineers, Geode is the privacy relayer that effectively conceals data access patterns from enclave to storage.

In fact, Geode can be used on the cloud and existing technical infrastructure. The hosting of the computing node is as simple as running a validator node on the blockchain.

Automata Validators and Automata Geodes will interact with each other across 3 planes: control, compute, and service. Each plane has a distinct and crucial function;

  • The Control Plane:
    • The coordinator. The validator will maintain a copy of the protocol state so that Geode can receive new tasks and report their statuses.
  • The Compute Plane:
    • The executor. So in the Compute Plane is where Geodes will complete scheduled tasks and submit proof of execution.
  • The Service Plane:
    • The user-facing. The Service Plane will allow vendors to develop and run applications in Geode without needing to host on Geode.

Introducing: Witness

Witness, Automata’s anonymous voting solution that works for privacy and a more robust governance experience, is already supported by various blockchain projects including Celer Network and MathWallet. The tooling solution allows users to hide their identity and voting preference, at the same time creating workspaces and submitting proposals without worries of data leaks or exposed privacy.

So feel free to check out their demo video, or try Witness for yourself.

The Difference

Automata Network has assembled an all-star roster on their team, and this translates into a clear, compelling vision that the team has done a superb job delivering so far, whether through its product, community interaction or just the right partnerships. In a market full of technologists who love to geek out about roadmaps and blueprints, the value of execution cannot be overstated. Prior to founding Automata, the co-founders were part of the core team at Zilliqa, the world’s first public blockchain built entirely on sharded architecture. Furthermore, having published at top-notch security conferences including IEEE Security and Privacy and USENIX Security, the team’s first-hand experience in the industry is unparalleled.

The Automata team truly believes in the power of Web3 and what they’re building:

  • Powerful privacy-focused features that are meaningful and crucial for any blockchain project
  • Enabling seamless integration for existing dApps with near-zero modification or downtime
  • Staying platform-agnostic, enabling portable access across myriad of platforms and ecosystems

It’s early days yet, but we couldn’t be more excited to support Automata Network. So we look forward to seeing all of the amazing work that the team will accomplish.
